10/15/2021 0 Comments All About Gantry CranesA gantry crane is an overhead crane usually constructed underneath a gantry, and is a vertical crane used to hoist or raise an object or work platform from a lower level. They are able to range dramatically in size, from huge "full-sized" gantry cranes capable of lifting extremely heavy loads in the hundreds of tons, to amazingly small, miniature gantry cranes used for very specific jobs within a building construction or industrial setting. Regardless of their size, most cranes function in a similar way, with the operator having a control panel to view all of the operations from an elevated position. The crane is controlled via cables and rope, and is either powered or operated by an engine. Most commonly, gantry cranes are used on very tall buildings and bridges, where the weight and number of people needing to be lifted or moved from one area to another is great. Bridges are particularly popular, as they are so useful in supporting high speed or high-volume traffic. One type of bridge crane, the nose bridge crane, is so powerful it requires the use of a high-speed electric motor. This crane has a crane boom that has a capacity of about twenty tons and can move in a straight line for five miles. While it cannot be used to move loads that are heavier than eighteen tons per load, it can be used to lift lighter loads, such as light logs. Because most modern gantry cranes are powered by electric motors, one leg must be capable of operating the crane independently, without help from the other legs. This is accomplished via a set of electric wheels on either end of the connecting rail. The forwardmost wheels are typically placed on the support structure, while the bottom ones are attached to the rails. Once the Gorbel Fixed Height Gantry Crane hoists or lifts the weight, it moves forward on the wheels until it is again assisted by the rear wheels. A separate rail then helps the crane tip forward, so it can tip the load to the direction of movement. Because some gantry cranes must work in confined areas where access is limited, there are some which have been designed to work in space by having flexible platforms on the ends of the connecting rail. The crane tips are supported by an extending arm which extends onto these flexible platforms and allows it to tip over if necessary. The disadvantage of using flexible platforms is that they can be easily tipped over if a load falls onto them. This is not a problem with solid gantry cranes which remain in place due to their weight or structure. There are many different kinds of cranes with different functions. However, all cranes require that the person working manage the movement of the equipment in order for it to perform its function. If the operator does not know how to do this, then it is important for the machine to be linked to someone who does, so that the operator can direct the work place to wherever it needs to go.
